THE GLITTERING PRIZES: THE MOSAICS OF RAVENNA Dr Christopher Herbert Wednesday 21 November 2018

Ravenna during part of the fifth century was the capital of the Western Roman Empire and, as a result, great building works were undertaken, including the Imperial Palace and what is now called the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. In the latter, there are mosaics of exquisite beauty and to enter the mausoleum is to walk into a jewel box, glistening with images of saints, heavenly stars, and the Good Shepherd. Close by is the sixth century Church of St Vitale and here the mosaics are also of the highest quality: a Christ in glory; Abraham and Isaac; fountains and angels, but perhaps the most astonishing of all, images of the Emperor Justinian and the Empress Theodora, robed in dazzling garments walking with their attendants in stately procession.

Christopher Herbert has lectured at the National Gallery, the Courtauld Institute, King’s College, London, Westminster Abbey, and the University of Rikkyo in Japan, and at churches and cathedrals throughout England and in Italy. He was until recently Bishop of St Albans and a member of the House of Lords. He has an MPhil and PhD in Art History from the University of Leicester. Created Visiting Professor in Christian Ethics in the School of Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey, and has also been awarded two honorary doctorates and is an honorary citizen of Fano, Italy.
